Yes, subtracting a lot of reliable generation and only partly replacing it with intermittents was a Bad Idea, but some states, including NJ, were also dealing with an aging grid in need of basic basic upgrades. Costs were starting to go up for ratepayers. Of course adding a lot of intermittent generation and penalizing the use of fossil fuels made things considerably worse, but I wouldn’t say the situation was all that rosy to start with.

I am a member of several groups who lobby against stupid energy policies, and they are forever trying to tie adoption of renewable energy to prices rises using simple graphs. I always advise against this because rates involve far too many factors for a simple graph to show anything credible. It ends up displaying mostly noise. As you point out here, delayed maintenance over long stretches of time can suddenly come due.
That's exactly what is happening in big renewable energy nations or states. Latest in the news Spain, after a massive grid failure last year caused by lack of firm capacity and grid inertia due to their total focus on wind & solar energy. Now deadly rail collisions killing over 40 and 150 injured. And another 4 rail accidents in the same week. You can't afford the wind & solar, while trying to fulfill lofty commitments net Net Zero, means cutting infrastructure maintenance costs.

I think it is a combination of both these issues, she is not that intelligent and certainly has never demonstrated any understanding of cause and effect when it comes to things like supply and demand and the subsequent clearing price. but she is very keen to show her climate bona fides, especially as they are opposite of President Trump's views, which when you are a low IQ democrat like her, is critical.
I fear I will be saddled with both high prices and less reliability for a long time going forward, which is why I have a backup generator.
Hi Andy, I'm not a fan of renewables, but here in South Africa the scheduled blackouts every day of the week from four to eight hours a day, called loadshedding, was killing us. The gasoline for the backup generator, even at our considerably lower prices compared to the US, limited us to running it for a couple of hours a day. So, we bought rooftop solar with batteries. Not cheap compared to grid electricity, but very cheap compared to the generator. Apart from water heaters, the rest of the house functioned normally. Think about it.
actually, my generator is a whole house Generac and connected to the Natural gas line so works beautifully, especially like this weekend when they are calling for 2' of snow and ice and I expect lots of blackouts. but thanks for the tip
I was considering getting a NG generator and had calculated that based on KWHr/CCF specs and price of gas it would actually be cheaper to run the house on the backup after the first 500 KWHr every month (ignoring maintenance and wear on generator).
Then Austin doubled natural gas prices as an attempt to back door ban natural gas, because the Texas Legislature told them they couldn't ban it outright through ordinance.
If I get a generator it will still be NG, but I might move out of Austin first.
The standard setup for off-grid homes is a diesel or propane generator, battery bank and solar panels. But you normally use the generator to just charge the batteries, running it at max output, for maximum efficiency. Or to supplement inverter power during peak evening demand. And solar will also charge the batteries.
The solar is less expensive than the diesel electricity, in good solar areas, but it is usually hopeless without the generator & large battery bank. Also a low cost gas generator to replace the diesel generator if it is down for maintenance. Many areas you have seasonal low solar so you will need to run mostly on generator. Overall it is expensive electricity.
You are running into the brick wall that The Energy Realists of Australia described in 20201, see Briefing Note 21.7. Wind and solar can DISPLACE coal but they can’t REPLACE it.
Ultimately wind and solar are unsustainable because they are parasitic on the more efficient conventional generators. Schernikau and Smith explain that they are a net drain on the energy economy of the world.

Clean Energy Programs = investing in immensely expensive energy resources that add very little grid value
Energy Efficiency = making uneconomic investments economic by handing out cash
Bill Assistance = benefiting a very few customers and eliminating they're incentive to manage their energy use.
The post does not convince me that VA energy rates are going up b/c of participation in a lax cap and trade program. Electricity rates in VA are rising because of higher fuel costs (power gen is ~60% NG), grid and transmission upgrades and *of course* rapid demand growth from massive data center development (Ashburn VA is the datacenter capital of the WORLD). So, in conclusion, this isn't because of a single policy or change, it's a confluence of factors. These factors together are putting upward pressure on bills that customers see each month.
With the re-entry of Virginia into the RGGI, and the extensive build-up of data centers in their state (they have Data Center Alley there, the largest concentration of data centers in the nation), they will have an electricity failure soon. Maybe not this year, but within the term of the newly-elected Governor Abigail Spanberger. Does she realize what the back-up for data center power supply is? Diesel fuel! If she wants to rant about her green energy initiatives, then I hope she will accept the responsibility for the black belching smoke powering these data centers in back-up mode after the first major power failure.
My guess? She won't. And the people that voted her into office will be stuck with the problems she brought back into the state.

And can be installed much quicker usually than the needed high capacity grid connection. I agree with a lot of this post, but you don't really make a compelling argument why Solar and Storage is a bad route to go to solve reliability. Most people agree that money needs to be spent on grid infrastructure.
There's an immense cost to doing that though, so anything we can do to shave dollars off how much traditional infrastructure needs to be built is a net positive. Additionally, electricity costs are disproportionally felt by homeowners, who don't make the same profit-loss calculations that businesses and data centers do.
Therefore, it makes sense to incentive homeowners to adopt solar + storage and remove their dependency from the grid. Whole home backup systems are getting cheaper and cheaper, not to mention the possibility of transmitting electricity back to the grid to support peaks.
I think solar + storage has become needlessly politicized because of its association with "green energy" and "climate-change". People did the same back when hybrid engines in cars came about, until it just became an economical thing rather than an ideological thing. Looking forward to that switch happening with solar + storage.

While US has blown ~$200B on the Ukraine quagmire, only thing they've accomplished is killing at least 200k Ukrainians, young boys, destroying vast expensive infrastructure, and granting Russia a large chunk of Ukraine's land & resources.

I agree with a lot of this post, but you don't really make a compelling argument why Solar and Storage is a bad route to go to solve reliability. Most people agree that money needs to be spent on grid infrastructure.
There's an immense cost to doing that though, so anything we can do to shave dollars off how much traditional infrastructure needs to be built is a net positive. Additionally, electricity costs are disproportionally felt by homeowners, who don't make the same profit-loss calculations that businesses and data centers do.
Therefore, it makes sense to incentive homeowners to adopt solar + storage and remove their dependency from the grid. Whole home backup systems are getting cheaper and cheaper, not to mention the possibility of transmitting electricity back to the grid to support peaks.
I think solar + storage has become needlessly politicized because of its association with "green energy" and "climate-change". People did the same back when hybrid engines in cars came about, until it just became an economical thing rather than an ideological thing. Looking forward to that switch happening with solar + storage.
